A Goal-Based Typology of Sociogovernance Processes in Marine Protected Areas

The paper develops a goal-based typology of sociogovernance processes to support effective and inclusive Marine Protected Area management, integrating insights from environmental governance, psychology, and marine social sciences. It identifies three core pillars—Knowledge and Understanding, Engagement and Participation, and Policies and Interventions—highlighting how their interactions can guide the selection of tools and improve stakeholder collaboration in achieving conservation goals.

Enhancing marine protected areas with effective ecological and environmental data integration

The paper examines factors influencing the effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas, focusing on the integration of ecological data, species and habitat functions, ecosystem processes, and connectivity in conservation planning and management. It also discusses the importance of adaptive, long-term, and participatory approaches to support resilience and inform decision-making in the context of environmental change.

Valuation of ecosystem services in marine protected areas: A comprehensive review of methods and needed developments

The article presents a systematic review of 100 peer-reviewed papers on ecosystem service valuation in MPAs and MPA networks. It examines both monetary and non-monetary valuation methods and highlights the importance of combining these approaches to better capture the full range of ecological and socio-economic values associated with MPAs. The review also identifies important methodological gaps, particularly regarding supporting and regulating ecosystem services, as well as non-use and option values, and outlines areas where further methodological development is needed.
